Ellis Marsalis Jr was a jazz pianist, teacher, and patriarch of the New Orleans musical clan died on Wednesday after battling pneumonia brought from the new coronavirus. As a musician Marsalis started out as a tenor saxophonist, switching to the piano while in high school. From his first professional performance with”The Groovy Boys” over fifty years back, he’s been a significant influence in jazz. At that moment, he was among the few New Orleans musicians who didn’t specialize in Dixieland or rhythm and blues. He performed with fellow modernists such as Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt, becoming one of the most respected pianists in jazz.
His didactic approach, along with an interest in philosophy, encourages his students to make discoveries in music by themselves, through experimentation and very careful listening. Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater focus in the 1980s and’90s as the patriarch of a musical family that was rising to international acclaim. As a leading teacher at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and the Xavier University of Louisiana, he has influenced the careers of countless musicians, such as Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., Nicholas Payton; along with his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason.
In 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical instruction. In 2008, Ellis Marsalis was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in Musicians’ Village in New Orleans is named in honor of him. In 2010, The Marsalis Family released a live album titled Music Redeems, which was recorded in The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC as part of the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival.

Ellis Marsalis Jr. died on 01-04-2020 in a hospital in New Orleans in the state of Louisiana, United States of America. He had been discovered coronavirus positive and admitted to a hospital. But because of old age, he was not able to fight with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and got infected with pneumonia and eventually died on 01-04-2020 at age 85.
