Widely called the”Queen of Misery” in Bollywood, Nirupa Roy is best-known to have portrayed character roles of Indian mother in Hindi movies. In her acting career spanning over 50 years, she has acted in over 275 movies.
Her acting career debut was marked with the Gujarati film Ranakdevi. Amar Raj, a Bollywood film of the year 1946 marked her first appearance in a Hindi movie. In the start of her career, she had been widely known for the portrayal of mythic characters. She played major roles alongside popular actors like Trilok Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Ashok Kumar, Balraj Sahni and many others. She’s famous for her roles in the films like Tangewali, Garam Coat, Do Bigha Zamin, Grahasti, Janam Janam Ke Phere and many others.
Later in the 70’s, she gained fame for her functions as an undercover suffering mother. She played the mother known in the popular Bollywood dialogue’Mere paas maa hain’ by Amitabh Bachchan in the film Deewar. She’s frequently considered as Bollywood’s greatest Mother of all times for unforgettable roles in films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Mard, Gunsundari, Deewar, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Rani Rupmathi and Others.
She also received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the year 2004. She had been the recipient of Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in the year 1956, 1962 and 1965. Nirupa Roy also won Best Supporting Actress Award from Bengal Film Journalists’ Organization for the film Chhaya.
He died because of a cardiac arrest in the age of 73.
From a young age of 15, she was married to Kamal Roy. They’d moved to Mumbai after union, looking for a career on the silver screen.
