Tabraiz Shamsi (born 18 February 1990) is a South African cricketer. His batting style is right-handed and he’s well known for his left-arm unorthodox spin bowling.
Tabraiz Shamsi Biography, Relationship & Career
A chinaman bowler with ample variations and a googly, Tabraiz Shamsi appeared as South Africa was beginning to warm to the tide of spinners being produced at national levels, although it took some time for him to come through.
Shamsi began his career in Gauteng, moved to Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, then Kwa-Zulu Natal and, if he fought to break through into the Dolphins franchise, moved back upcountry to combine Titans. Initially, he seemed destined to play with provincially just but an impressive 2013-14 season for Easterns, where he took 47 wickets in 20.02 to finish third at the cup wicket-takers’ list, got him more opportunities for the franchise.
He played five games in the 2014-15 franchise 20-over contest and captured the eye of the touring West Indians, who had been visiting South Africa that summer. There, Shamsi rose to some prominence, taking 11 wickets in 13.27 in the seven games he played.
More regular opportunities in franchise cricket came another season and Shamsi took them. He finished as the top spinner in South Africa’s first-class contest in the 2015-16 summer, where he took 41 wickets in 19.97 in Titans’ title-run. He was less successful in shorter formats but he maintained a market rate of just more than seven runs to the over in T20s, which had him picked for the South African A side that was enjoying with the touring England XI at a T20 warm-up match.
Even larger breaks came when he was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement player for the wounded Samuel Badree throughout the 2016 IPL and, soon after, chose in South Africa’s ODI squad to play a triangular series in the Caribbean. He has been in and out of the side for some time and even when he’s picked, he’s mostly warmed the seat as Imran Tahir has been SA’s first-choice spinner. He also featured in the South African group that traveled to England for the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup. He though played only a couple of games for them and was not that effective too.
